Oblong paper bank notes that were interminably "in the mail" and often a topic of conversation on Fridays. Check delivery by postal service allowed for a certain grace period in which one could amass the necessary funds. Sometimes bounced ones were displayed on the wall behind a deli cashier. Often decorated with monograms, pinstripes, or scenes from Winnie the Pooh.
